Yang Shenghui & Zeng Shuhui


Twenty years ago, Yang Shing-hui and Tsang Shu-hui were incidentally instructed by the great master Huang Tushan and have been in love with bamboo knitting art since. They became the backbone of bamboo art and culture as they not only continued to make creation but were also frequently invited to teach bamboo knitting skill.

Zeng Shu-hui recalled when she participated in the study courses of bamboo art, held by the Institute of Handicraft in 1990s, she fell in love with bamboo knitting and other creation of bamboo. And she was lucky enough to have the chance to be instructed by Mr. Huang Tushan, the great master of bamboo art. She watched how he ripped open bamboo with freehand and then cut them into different thickness of bamboo twigs, even as thin as a hair, and his craftsmanship amazed her greatly.

In addition, they can also use a variety of bamboo techniques to use techniques of pressuring and picking to compile a piece of furniture or daily necessities, as an eye-opener. Later, Zeng Shu-hui, under the guidance of the master Li Ronglie, accumulated more and more sophisticated bamboo skills for creation by herself. Yang Shenghui as a teacher also engaged in bamboo of handicrafts after class. and the couple really enjoy their world of bamboo creation.

In order to manifest the bamboo craftsmanship tradition, Yang Shenghui and Zeng Shuhui are often invited to attend the bamboo learning activities on holidays, teaching people some simple bamboo knitting skills, so that the public can appreciate the beauty of bamboo and bring bamboo into the daily life, and thus, the bamboo weaving techniques can be continued.

Yang Shenghui and Zeng Shu-hui have decided to devote themselves fully to the creation of bamboo weaving techniques after their retirement from vocational positions. It is their hope that more young people will understand and discover the beauty of bamboo weaving and the skills can be preserved and even flourished with vitality, creativity and ingenuity as the life of art.
